Welcome to Brighton Buccaneers Wheelchair Rugby Club

Wheelchair rugby is a fast-paced, full-contact sport designed for athletes with physical disabilities. It combines elements of rugby, basketball, and handball, and is played on a standard basketball court. It’s an intense, strategic, and physically demanding sport that offers exciting competition for athletes with disabilities!

Unlike many wheelchair sports, wheelchair rugby is a full-contact game where players use their specially designed wheelchairs to block, hit, and disrupt opponents. It was created in Canada in the 1970s and was originally called Murderball.

Wheelchair rugby became a Paralympic sport in 2000. Great Britain won their first-ever Wheelchair Rugby Paralympic gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games (held in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

Never played before?

Not a problem.  We offer three FREE training sessions for new players, so you can ‘try before you buy’. Just pop along to any of our training sessions.

What equipment do I need?

Very little.  Just wear some general sportswear and maybe bring a pair of gloves.  Rubberised gardening gloves are perfect but don’t worry of you can’t find any.  We usually have some spare gloves kicking around. We will provide the rugby chairs.

Am I eligible to play?

If you have any physical disability then you are probably eligible, but we will be happy to discuss with you if you are in doubt.  Just call us on 07565 177023.
